The book starts from a tale of the unexpected turns a war can take and how various relationships can ruin a kingdom at the peak of its glory. It is a tale of death, war, hunger, sickness, murder, and grief but it also speaks of victory, sacrifice, loyalty, and love.
Next, we recount the sacrifices that the rulers and their families have to make to grow their kingdom from modest beginnings to powerful empires. It talks of children who had outgrow their childhood in days to assume the role of a ruler and the years spent living away from their families so that the kingdom can prosper.
Finally, we go through the personal struggles of the rulers trying to bring up their children so that they can become rightful rulers in a world surrounded by their enemies. It tells of victories that are worth nothing compared to the unrecoverable losses. It talks of acts that would otherwise be considered unimaginable and of the turns of fate that can spell disaster for the kingdom.
